Bob's Thoughts: What do we fear?

A few days ago I read Isaiah 8:12-13: "Do not fear what they fear; do not be terrified. You are to regard only the LORD of Hosts as holy. Only He should be feared; only He should be held in awe." - HCSB - In the context of the verses, I was struck by the fact that it's not like Israel was fearing something unreasonable or foolish, like supersitition or something. They could see two nations who had allied and were preparing to invade their nation, and who were strong enough to conquer them easily. What was wrong about fearing a perfectly logical and reasonable threat like that? Wouldn't it be foolish NOT to be afraid of that? Nevertheless, God said that Isaiah (and me, by analogy) shouldn't be using human reason to work out what things to be afraid of. I should have a different perspective and a different value system to assign what is worthy of expending my mental energy upon. Just because a situation or development looks ominous in the human realm, I shouldn't be afraid of it. I will probably have to deal with that a lot in preparing for the mission field, so I need to get used to this outlook on life.
